Wow! Adam Gilchrist from the Invincible Australian Cricket team of the late 90s and early 2000s. That's almost a decade of domination by a cricket team, who wore their prides on their sleeves, with captains like Steve Waugh and Ricky 'Punter' Ponting.
Talking about Gilchrist, a swashbuckling wicket-keeper batsman, who redefined batting up the order, along with Matthew 'Haydos' Hayden. Gilchrist had this theory of "see ball, hit ball" and along with Haydos scripted some amazing ODI victories for Australia over the years.
Gilly, as he was popularly known, was a team man and would constantly egg up the bowlers, from behind the stumps to pep up their confidence and get them going.
Such were the power of his shots, that they would race off to the boundary, like a tracer bullet. Blessed with immense hand-eye coordination, Gilly played some amazing innings in the finals, whenever it mattered. His 149 in the 2007 World Cup Final, is remembered for the hard hitting and the assistance he got, by inserting a halved squash ball in his glove, to improve his shot making. An innings to remember indeed!
He was also a "Walker," who never waited for the umpire's decision, if he felt he was out. He took up towards being a walker, when someone in his early club playing days, congratulated him for his victory, however rebuked him through words, for playing on, in spite of his conscience knowing that, he was out. After that, Gilly swore to play by the 'spirit of the game', and this pledge did help him script a glorious chapter for himself and for Australian cricket.
Gilly went on to score tons of runs in Tests, ODIs and franchise T20 cricket and will always be remembered for his swashbuckling and blitzkrieg innings, with those out-of-the-park sixers! He also inspired the likes of MSD, Sangakkara, deKock and many young kids to look up to wicket-keeping as a passionate and fashionable position in the cricket team. #styleditup
Go on Gilly! It's been a privilege to watch you play, as an individual, a team man and with the right spirit.
Much respect to you. #GreatGoingGilly
