Colorful, culture filled and consistently glorious! Welcome to the sunburn-esque and sundry festival, for a section of people in India, who are attached to the southernmost strip of land in India - Kerala!
Considered as God's Own Country, for its natural beauty - green cover and lagoons alike, Onam is a traditional harvest festival that is syncretic in nature and brings humanity under one roof, so to speak!
A strictly vegetarian fare on a plantain leaf called the Sadhya, takes prominence during this festival. Anything close to 26 dishes, 4 sweet dishes, and snacks are served in this elaborate lunch-n-dine experience, that leaves all foodie souls satisfied! In certain sections of Kerala, Southern Malabar per se, one can expect the Malabari Meat Biryani or Appams and Chicken Stew too!
Cometh the festival - to commemorate King Mahabali, who was considered as the most prosperous and jest king to have ruled the state and according to mythology, even sacrificed his life, to ensure that his subjects were safe. Every year, he appears from the nether world, to celebrate #Onam with subjects and loves indulging in Unni Appams, Banana sweets, Rice, Sambhar, Avial, Pachaddi and much more!
Isn't it heart touching to see that, such a prosperous, 100% literate strip of land, has a common festival that is syncretic in nature and spreads the message of unity and peace? The societies within the state, need much adulation for being real life ambassadors of the state.
Time to wear those 'kasavu' mundus, slip into those jubbas, while the ladies drape the 'onnara,' with much grace, poise and elan! The deepams and kanis are out, and families unite to pray for peace, prosperity and lives filled with love!
#OnamAashamsakal to everyone!
