Splash, Thunder, Deluge - The events in Mumbai over the past couple of days, have pushed the city towards the brink of sinking, due to un-seasonal and sporadic rainfall across the city.
The scenes were unprecedented, as suburbs and citizen frenzied locations were clogged with rainwater, touching almost 4 feet. Cars, motorbikes and buses plying on the roads were stranded for hours, as the lashing rains showed no signs of stopping.
Every #Mumbaikar faced the backlash of Mother Nature, which has been caused in effect, due to Global Warming, leading to off seasonal rains and gusto winds, throwing normal life off balance.
However, the stories of humanity coming together to save lives are heartening. The Twitter feed of people were filled with messages of invitation at homes, restaurants and coffee shops to camp and save one's self from the raining misery.
Large corporations ensuring that the men and women working for them, reached home, no matter what time of the night, was instrumental in keeping the spirit of every #Mumbaikar, un-dampened from this downpour.
The appalling scenes do open a can of worms for the local authorities and the State Government. Their no-show on the streets, coupled with the feeble disaster management, social infrastructure and readiness, poses a lot of questions to be answered.
Can the law abiding, tax paying Mumbaikar expect better civic amenities and avoid an repeat of the manic scenes from 2005? Have lessons been learn from the past, and can #MaximumCity ever have some world class facilities to ready itself to face the challenges that come upon it?
As every #Mumbaikar dries himself up and looks back at the scenes from the past 2 days, he/she can only hope that the city gets back on its feet and continues to give #MaximumOutput, even it that means bursting from the seams!
It's time, every individual raises his voice for public amenities, that avoid repeat of such scenes, and the social impact remains strong enough for everyone to witness.
