#ToiletEkPremKatha #TEPK (2017) is an satirical take on the open defecation issue that has plagued the nation for centuries. With a toilet as the central figure of the movie, actors Bhumi Pednekar and Akshay Kumar, along with a watchable support cast, etch out some memorable performances.
What important to note is that over 60 percent of India, especially in the rural areas, defecate in the open, due to age old traditions and rituals, which debar toilets from being built in houses. This tradition is considered as hogwash for many, however forced upon people in rural areas.
Due to the lack of proper sanitation facilities for women, they travel miles during dusk, to relieve themselves, which also leads to cases of eve teasing and attacks of sexual nature on them.
In the movie, Bhumi Pednekar is a woman, educated and possessed towards bringing a change in the backward mindset of people, while campaigning for toilets in her husband's village.
Akshay plays the role of an understanding husband, who settles for nothing less than ensuring that his wife gets a toilet at home, for her ablutions.
There is even a funny incident, where the both are dragged into the courtroom for a divorce settlement, over the lack of toilet at their home.
While this movie has comical acts across sections, it also touches upon how Governments have been working towards improving sanitation facilities, however due to twisted mindsets and poor judgment of rural Indians - developed due to lack of education; money spinning toilet scams pop up.
This movie is educative, entertains and even makes the viewer introspect about the image that the country bears, due to lack of good and well equipped sanitation facilities.
While PM Narendra Modi, looks to make his Clean India mission a reality, the onus lays on citizens to ensure that sanitation and hygiene become an integral part of our lives.
A commendable job by everyone behind this movie, based on true incidents.
#TEPK is a romantic movie, the centers around the rim of the commode and allows us to flush away ill thoughts, plaguing the nation.
