Some movies make you stand up and take notice. They blend into the system, just like it were "us" on-screen. They have an element of simplicity, making it real to the core. #RealOnReel
I was stoked to watch 'The Lunchbox(2013) and must admit certain directors and artists are God-gifted. The ability to pick up a normal story and give it a humane touch is spectacular. #EpistolaryRomance
Set in the hustle and bustle of Mumbai and based on an one-in-a-million error by The Mumbai Dabbawallas - the food lifeline of Mumbai, these food messiahs have been honored by The Harvard University and even acclaimed by Prince Charles.
Ila (Nimrat Kaur), a typical Indian housewife, cooks meals for her husband daily, with the lure of getting him to love her much more than ever. For that, she takes the help of 'Auntie' - an aged women living upstairs, just to ensure that she gets the seasoning right, in all her dishes.
Call it chance or pure destiny, Ila's home cooked meals, finds its way to Saajan Fernandes(Irrfan Khan) desk, a retiring Government official, who is also a widower. With each passing day, he enjoys the various dishes, whipped up by Ila and the both of them, begin sharing letters on their preferences in food, matters of life and daily happenings.
As the calendar flips, Fernandes is also reminded that his days in the office are numbered, and he is entrusted with the task of training a young, motor mouth new joiner, Shaikh (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who seeks to learn from Fernandes and become proficient at his job, in the process.
Extremely natural, calculated and overtly sublime performances by Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawaz Bhai. All of them, come from theater backgrounds and their rendition of the #emotionseasel is simply amazing!
Newbie director Ritesh Batra and his crew, must be complimented for leaving a lot of the parts of the story loose ended, thereby allowing the viewers to delve deeper into the emotional bonds created between the characters on-screen. The chants of "Nanoba" reverberate during key moments of the movie, allowing each viewer to connect with the pulse of Mumbai.
The movie is a must watch for people, who enjoy simplicity on-screen, with plots that unfold at a languid pace, and easily weave into the minds of everyone. #simplicityineveryframe
