Jack Dorsey says its a product of the times we have been living in, especially the plethora of data, that is being consumed and constructed online. Over one completed days, millions of tweets, direct messages, polls and Twitter cards are being sent and used, and everyone seems hungrier for more!
Welcome to Twitter 2.0; where the characters for communication, are on the path towards doubling, except for certain South East Asian (SEA) languages like Japanese, where it's easy to communicate with brevity.
The #280characters move, being met with brickbats, critique and love from various quarters of the world, seems to be a strategic decision towards pushing #Twittertowards being more mainstream, in being considered for as a social media platform to be reckoned, on a consistent basis.
Don't get me wrong. It still does feature among a lot of companies' list of channels to be on, thanks to its #nowdefunct less is more concept, however the doubling of characters, gives it any opportunity to be more 'instanter' than instant, more in-your-face, and have increased adoption among that set of audience, who've always misconstrued the platform.
Lest, be assured, that the allure, charm and challenge, that was affined with this microblogging site, will take a hit, however maybe for a while. Users always have been receptive of change, albeit a small group of naysayers.
As the #280character limit, gets rolled out to global users in phases, this does give everyone, an #inforush, on how better the platform could be used. Newer campaigns in the pipeline, will now have to deal with keeping it short, simple and being judicious in character selection, without losing out on the #goingdouble effect.
Twitter has the ingredients to now flourish into a much more focused data company, thanks to its user base worldwide and stiffen up the competition on the social media space!
Beyond #Doublecharacters, the trolls, memes, and tweetchats just got a tad more exciting and engaging! Here's to the best that should happen in the days ahead!
