Not that anyone ever doubted that, and well at times, I've witnessed dry humor by some wonderful women I have befriended. I rest my case, and am glad to announce that India women can be successful stand-up comedians and tickle people's funny bones in the process. It's in-built in them, and they can progress on many levels of comedy.
I was left laughing my derriere off, over the last couple of weeks, when #QueensOfComedy was aired on TLC. I watched it on YouTube, and was stunned to see the lording stage presence and the scripting of sets by 8 extremely talented women.
Urooj Ashfaq, Nivedita Prakasam (The Ultimate Winner), Surbhi Bagga, Dwijal Mehta, Saadiya Ali, Anshita Koul and the others, had impeccable comedy timing and left audiences clutching their tummies, with laughter.
A lot of them interspersed their sets with dark humor, situational comedy, funky punchlines, self deprecated humor, character vilification, humor improvisation and much more.
The judges (Rohan Joshi, Richa Chadha, Kaneez Surka - stand up comedian, actress and improv queen respectively), had their hands full, and just couldn't end up deciding whom to eliminate and whom to crown as the ultimate #QueenOfComedy
Nivedita, Urooj and Saadiya are a bunch to watch out for, and Surbhi, Dwijal will definitely be a part of the open mic scenes more often. I think all the women got wonderful exposure over the past 8 weeks of the show, and are truly talented in their own right.
They've fought patriarchy and built their images, based on their wit, humor and dare, to do something different.
These women have the talent to go miles, and make people around the nation, and even the world chuckle hard, and have a belligerent time; by making open mics their own.
While Nivedita will end up with a show of her own on TLC, watch out for the others as they promise to take the online space by storm and invade your screens (large and compact devices), with quirky shows, web series and spoofs of their owns.
The comedy scene in India, just got womansplained and this is exciting news for all of us.
#MoreTalent to bring the house down and keep people laughing louder than ever before; on topics unheard, untouched, yet morally, socially and thoughtfully very much in vogue.
Go strong women! You can inspire many other women to make serious careers in comedy, and spread the #happinessmantra
